Distracted driving is defined by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as, “a specific type of inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention away from the task of driving to focus on another activity instead.”
An estimated 660,000 drivers are using their cell phones or a similar electronic device each day while driving. Every day, 1,071 people are injured, and nine people die in the U.S. because of distracted driving. It is difficult to drive safely while distracted.
Here are 5 tips from the NHTSA on how to properly “Mind the Road:”
- Always pull over to text, take a call, or play a game.
- As a mindful passenger, speak up when the driver tries to use an electronic device while driving.
- Before you get behind the wheel, turn off your electronic devices or put them out of reach.
- Be a good role model for young drivers and set a good example. Talk with your teens about responsible driving.
- Always wear your seat belt.
