Decisions about a person’s ability to drive should never be based on age alone. However, changes due to normal aging may affect a person’s ability to drive as they get older. These may include diminished vision, slower reaction times, declines in cognitive functioning, and decreasing muscle strength and range of motion.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers the following tips on driving safely while aging gracefully.
- Be aware of your physical limitations and how they may affect your driving.
- Listen to those people who know you best and care about you the most.
- Talk to your doctor about your driving as he or she can evaluate the side effects of your medications and their effects on driving.
- Take a mature driving class to refresh your knowledge of safe driving practices.
- Explore other transportation options in your community and begin planning in case your ability to drive changes.
